Protea effusa is sometimes known as the scarlet sugarbush or in Afrikaans blosrooisuikerbos and is endemic to the Western Cape province of South Africa. It’s suspected of being a natural hybrid Protea recondita, crossed with P. pendula) but require further study.
It is also pollinated by rodents, I gave it a good sniff and it smells like yummy bread 😁🍞 Mature individuals are also killed by wildfire, and like most Proteas, the seeds can survive and are stored in the fire-resistant dried old inflorescences. The seeds are released after fires, and dispersed by means of the wind.
