Its seeds are stored in the old flower heads on the plant, so seeds are saved up over many years forming an aerial seed bank – this is called serotiny. When the bush is killed by fire the seeds are released and many new plants sprout from the seeds, recolonizing the area as quickly as possible, which is why fires are so important to the floral kingdom in the Western Cape.
