Aloes are well adapted to the arid conditions found in their natural environment. Their succulent leaves enable them to survive prolonged periods of drought. Sharp thorns and spines, as well as usually bitter leaf sap, are good deterrents for many herbivores. Brightly coloured, tubular flowers that are filled with nectar are a welcome source of food during the winter.
