This plant is only common after fires and often does not flower at all more than 2 years after a burn! So this was a very rare sighting of which I had no clue at the time of photographing it! It is highly restricted to the South Western Cape, and only occurs in moist sandy flat areas. For a long time I had confused this plant with Watsonia humulis, and I was relieved to know that even amongst the botany pros, there is confusion between three species of Watsonia (humulis, meriana and coccinea) Apparently Watsonia coccinea usually has a red flower, but looking at the distribution and the fact that coccinea can also have pink and purple flowers, we can confirm it’s true identity! In general, W. coccinea is a much smaller plant rarely exceeding 15-20cm in height.
