Parts of Stapelia gigantea have been reportedly used by the Zulus as a remedy for hysteria, however these plants are mainly sought by succulent plant collectors. In general, Stapelias are never very abundant and are scattered over vast areas. The largeness and colour of the flower combined with the rotting flesh smell makes flies think that it is a dead carcass which helps them pollinate the plant. It has also been proposed that the large flowers work as thermal regulators for the plant, much like the large ears of a Fennec fox
