This is a beautiful, magnificent.. slightly scary Puff Adder (Bitis arietans) a venomous viper species found throughout Africa except for the Sahara and rainforest regions. Puff adders are NOT responsible for causing the most snakebite fatalities in Africa which is apparently a popular myth. The Saw scaled vipers of the genus Echis account for the most human fatalities in Africa. They can strike to a distance of about one-third of their body length, but juveniles can launch their entire bodies forwards in the process. These snakes rarely grip their victims, but instead release quickly to return to the striking position.
